This Site is about Quake 2 and Quake 2 Engine Games. Quake 2 revolutionized the gaming industry by introducing the 'next gen' game. It brought many improvements over everything currently existing in the realm of first person shooters. Several games have become popular using this engine - Heretic 2, Half-Life, Quake 2, and Sin for example.
This is an example - however poor - of the engine's power for graphics.
Not only is the engine good, but it is easily modified so as to make independent, non-profit programmers multitudinous. Such programmers have created 'mods' for Quake 2 such as my personal favorite Weapons Factory. Weapons Factory is a CTF (Capture The Flag) mod which means it is capture the flag but with it's own peculiar differences. The CTF part is as it sounds. . . you fight to capture each other's flag, however, instead of normal the marines found in Quake 2, you have many classes - each with their different abilities and weapons packages.
Quake 2 also introduced many other mods and TCs. A TC is a Total Conversion - a really drastic mod. An example of a TC is Heretic II. The thing about Heretic II is that it is more than a TC - it introduced the Quake 2+ engine. This engine brought many improvements one of which is third person perspective.
Heretic II took us out of the world of military weaponsand alien hordes and put us in a world of magic and plague ridden elves. In Heretic II you play as corvus, the hero of Heretic. After defeating the serpent rider D'sparil, corvus was cursed to wander the elder worlds. Finally corvus gets back to his home world, Parthoris, only to find it in shambles and its people mad with a plague.
